Food Vouchers

WIC clients may receive checks/vouchers each month that can be used to buy specific healthy foods that have been pre-selected based on nutritional value and cost. The goal is to help families save money on groceries by introducing an additional source of healthy foods into their kitchens. We also strive to help families discover the value of healthy eating on a budget by offering nutritional advice, tips, recipes, and snack ideas.

Food vouchers may only be used for WIC-approved foods, and participants are trained how and where to shop with the vouchers. Some of the WIC-approved foods include:

• Fruits

• Vegetables

• Whole wheat bread

• Soft corn or whole-wheat tortillas

• Brown rice

• Beans

• Milk

• Cheese

• Peanut Butter

• Cereal

• Infant formula

• Baby foods for infants 6 months and older

• Soy beverages for children with milk allergies

Exclusively breastfeeding women receive extra benefits, including salmon and tuna, along with extra amounts of some of the other WIC foods.

Some of the key nutrients WIC foods provide include:

• Calcium

• Protein

• Iron

• Folic acid

• Fiber

• Vitamins A, D, and C

Montana Farm Direct: Farmer’s Market Program Vouchers

WIC clients may also receive vouchers to be used specifically to buy fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables from local Farmers’ Markets in the summer months. Preapproved Farmers’ Markets have been trained to cash the vouchers properly.

This is a first-come, first-served service, as each county is approved for a limited amount by this grant.
